Title: A Novel Approach for Advancing Carbon Reduction Strategies in Power Plants

Date: 2023 - 2024

Description: This study investigates machine learning applications in energy systems, offering a groundbreaking roadmap to streamline complex optimization processes through systematic approaches. Explores transitions from system parameter modeling to data-driven optimization in more than 40 steps and processes. To validate the methodology, 6 years of combined cycle power plant (CCPP) operation data from Turkey's northwest region were analyzed. An online simulation tool is initiated that evaluates variations in the level of nitrogen oxides (NOx) of the power plant relative to environmental factors and input conditions without performing complex optimal solutions for each scenario. The proposed algorithm minimizes the exhaust pressure of the plant and controls NOx levels in the plant, achieving optimal values of 17.844 (mb) for the exhaust pressure and 78.66 (mg/m³) for NOx. Mathematical modeling and Python code are provided for easy tracking and adoption in various applications, ensuring adequate modeling and fine-tuning with a minimal loss index. This study presents an exhaustive framework for successful deployment of neural networks (NNs), considering impactful factors in detail, and aligning machine learning requirements in practice. Employing the proposed modeling, contributes in pattern identification, high accuracy, and improvement potential, making it a useful tool for forecasting and decision-making in complex energy systems.

Title: Sensitive Buses Identification and Optimization: A Key to Large-Scale Renewable Energy Integration in Power Systems

Description: Adopting an innovative framework, this study transcends traditional weak bus identification, exploring the interplay and causality among buses beyond direct connections. This multidimensional approach enhances system planning and operation by facilitating a comprehensive understanding of system load changes and elucidating the impact of a single bus load alteration across the entire system. This methodology could underpin optimal renewable technology allocation in diverse contexts, promoting holistic system analysis. The research employed a combination of sensitivity and causality analysis to identify the most critical buses in the system, extending the analysis to the entire system rather than just neighboring buses. A web-based simulator was developed to predict the future values of the system's most critical bus, "B03", considering the influence of other impactful buses under two conditions: their value in a previous time period (t-1) and their steady-state value before the simulation. Furthermore, an optimization process was performed to minimize the load on the critical B03 bus. By optimally distributing the load across the system based on the loadability of the entire system, the load at B03 was reduced from an initial 11.12 kWh to 10.83 kWh. The neural network model, with a lower error rate of 3.85%, was more accurate than the baseline model in predicting the load on bus B03. Title: Scenario-Driven Optimization of Multiple Renewable Energy Source Integration in a Power System to Achieve Net-Zero CO2 Emissions Through Techno-Economic Resiliency Simulations

Description: Integrating renewable energy sources (RES) into power systems presents significant challenges due to their diverse nature and operational characteristics. This study addresses these challenges through an innovative strategy that simulates solar and wind farms, storage systems, fuel cell generators of hydrogen energy (via electrolysis), and hydrogen storage, all governed by an intelligent controller. Alongside a mathematical model defining the system's dynamics, a multi-objective optimization model is employed, exploring the system's operational, financial, and environmental impacts. While the mathematical model has limitations, the advanced model captures the system's dynamic behavior with exceptional precision. This intelligent simulation simplifies the complex interrelationships between various resources in the system, highlighting the viability of RES integration for enhanced benefits. Multi-objective optimization of a real case study of Iowa 240-Bus power system in the Midwest US has resulted in an annual savings of $126,147.8, along with a significant CO2 reduction of 951,035.6 kg compared to the basecase. The total annual energy costs, including capital costs and electricity sales, are reported to be $157,430.4, and the total annual CO2 emissions are -4,453.8 kg.
